Vietnamese Student Fined NT$200,000 for Bringing Grandma's Food into Taiwan

Vietnamese Student Fined NT$200,000 for Bringing Grandma's Food into Taiwan

Recently, a Vietnamese student made headlines after being fined a significant amount for bringing undeclared items into Taiwan. During an immigration check, the student had traditional food prepared by his grandmother discovered in his luggage. Although these items were made with love, they violated Taiwan's import regulations.

Reports indicate that the student failed to declare the items he carried during immigration, raising the suspicion of customs officials. Upon inspection, officials found the homemade food items that expressed the student's affection for his grandmother, which, however, led to a fine of NT$200,000 due to legal regulations.

The incident has sparked discussion among many netizens, with numerous individuals expressing sympathy for the student’s situation, suggesting that he brought the food out of longing for his family. Conversely, some criticized him for not having informed himself about the relevant regulations before entering Taiwan, asserting that as a foreign student, he should have been aware of local laws.

In response to this incident, Taiwan's customs authorities emphasized that all incoming travelers must adhere to the regulations concerning imported food. To safeguard domestic agriculture and public health, Taiwan has established strict laws regarding food imports, whereby any uninspected food items could pose risks of foreign pests and diseases that might affect local ecosystems. Therefore, customs officials require that travelers truthfully declare any food items they bring into the country.

The Vietnamese student, upon realizing his violation, expressed deep regret during an interview, stating, "I really didn’t know there was such a law. I just wanted to bring my grandmother's love to Taiwan and didn't expect to be fined like this." He admitted that he often felt homesick while living in Taiwan, and the food was a way for him to connect with his roots.

Ultimately, this incident serves not only as a financial loss for the student but also prompts future travelers to reflect on how to maintain familial connections while abiding by legal regulations. His story stands as a cautionary tale, urging everyone to stay informed about and comply with the laws of their destination.
